A 3 day course by Alex Kelly

Dates: 7th, 8th, 9th March 2017

Venue: 243-245 Clifton Drive South
Lytham St Annes, Lancashire

An Introduction

The importance of being socially skilled cannot be over estimated.  We all need these skills to communicate effectively in order to listen to others, to express ourselves, to be taken seriously and to make friends.  And we know that social competence contributes to quality of life and has been repeatedly demonstrated to be a critical variable in predicting success in future life.  However not all children develop social competence naturally.  Some children are socially unskilled and require intervention.  So what can be done to help them? Where do you start and how can it be done?

The first day is an introduction to social skills – where to start and what can be done to develop social skills. Days 2 and 3 aim to give the participants the practical skills to assess and teach social skills, self esteem and relationship skills.

Who is the course suitable for?

This course is aimed at people who work with children with social skills difficulties – for example: speech and language therapists, teachers, teaching assistants, psychologists, and OTs. It may also be of interest to parents.

Who is Alex Kelly?

Alex Kelly is a speech and language therapist with 27 years’ experience of working with people with social skills difficulties.  She is the author of the best selling TALKABOUT resources and runs her own business providing social skills training and consultancy work and her company provides speech and language therapy into 10 local special schools. She also has recently set up a new service in the UK called Speaking Space, which is a small Day Service for adults with learning disabilities and autism.  She is well known for being inspirational and passionate in her work with people who have disabilities.

A recent quote about her training

‘I just wanted to say thanks for a really good thorough workshop. It’s not always that you come away from something feeling not only inspired but also resourced enough to feel that you can go away and implement immediately. I’m really looking forward to setting everything up at my school and I will let you know how it all goes’ (Helen Clarke, SLT, Jan 2011)

‘The most useful & enjoyable training session I have done in 20 years! Brilliant!’ (Gwynne Owen, North Wales, 2012)
